Neck Pain Treatment
Neck pain and neck stiffness are due to misalignment and injuries to the neck vertebral. If you leave it untreated, it may lead to accelerated spinal degeneration, slipped disc or nerve compression.
Neck pain is also referred to as cervical pain. Neck problems are often caused by bad posture at the computer, sports injuries, and traumatic injuries. If you use a laptop, your pain is likely caused by you “sticking” your head downwards to view the screen.
There are four principal types of neck pain:
- Axial Neck Pain
Axial neck pain is caused by the complex interaction of muscles and ligaments. Symptoms typically include pain or soreness in the posterior paramedian neck muscles with radiation to the back of the head or shoulder. Also quite common are stiffness in one or more directions of motion and headache. Local warmth or tingling as well as localised areas of muscle tenderness may also be encountered. Initially a very common secondary symptom is headache, and often such symptoms are interpreted and treated as migraines without success.
- Whiplash-Associated Disorder (WAD)
Rear-end motor vehicle crashes and diving injuries are the most common causes of whiplash associated disorder. Symptoms are similar to Axial neck pain.
- Cervical Radiculopathy
Cervical radiculopathy is characterised by motor and/or sensory changes in the neck and arms, which results from extrinsic pressure on a cervical nerve root. Pain is frequently aggravated by arm position and extension or lateral rotation of the head.
- Cervical Myelopathy
Cervical Myelopathy also results from extrinsic pressure; specifically, a decrease in the space available in the cervical canal for the spinal cord. The more common signs include clumsiness, weakness and stiffness in the upper and lower extremities.
The common approach to “treating” neck pain is a massage, but like pain-killers, it doesn’t get to the root of the problem and provides only short-term relief.
A chiropractic adjustment will alleviate your neck pain and remove any inconveniences. When you arrive at our clinic, we will perform a series of examinations and conduct an interview to understand the cause of your neck pain.
