What is Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a healthcare approach which looks at the relationship between the spinal column, the skeletal system, and the connecting soft tissues and nerves in the restoration and maintenance of health.

Where conventional medicine focuses on curing illness through surgery and pharmaceuticals, the goal of chiropractic is to optimise health with a non-invasive approach. Chiropractic's primary avenue of care is manipulation of the spine and the framework of the body. It seeks to treat diseases without the use of drugs or chemicals, but to the musculoskeletal area which is not functioning properly.

Philosophy of Chiropractic

A basic philosophy of chiropractic is that the body naturally seeks the proper balance among all the systems of the body, and that these systems are meant to work together. A second basic principle is that proper structure is necessary for proper function. If a structure is impaired by injury or stress, its function can be adversely affected.

For example, when our spine—structure—is not positioned normally, or if one of more of your vertebrae moved out of position, it can irritate the nerves exiting the spine. This is called a vertebral subluxation. When spinal nerves are irritated, they don't function normally and can affect the function of the tissues they interact with.

As your nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of your body, if there are nerve interferences, parts of your body will not be getting the proper nerve message and it will not function properly.

The role of the Chiropractor will be to locate these subluxations and correct them. This is done through a series of treatments, or adjustments, which are designed to correct the subluxations in your spine.
