Bring a Spring to Your Swing - Chiropractic and Golf Golf is a very distinct kind of sport in which heavy rotation is required. Due to this rotational stress on the lumbar spine, low back pain is almost unavoidable. Golfers have the highest incidence of back injury of any professional athlete. In one review by Callaway and Jobe of the injuries sustained during the 1985-1986 PGA tour, 230 of 300 professional golfers were injured. Of these injuries, 43.8% were related to the spine.

Preventing Injuries From Happening: Proper stretching: before and after a golf session is of great importance. A cold and unconditioned muscle is the main reason for low back injury as well as soft tissue (muscle or ligament) tearing. A cold muscle needs to be warmed up and strengthened in order to work effectively and in synergy with other muscle groups to produce a smooth and strong swing as well as to provide protection to the spine. Absorb rotation at hips, knees and shoulders to minimize tension stress, while distributing the rotational stress away from the lumbar spine to the entire spine Maintain parallel shoulders and pelvis through the majority of the swing, which requires rigid abdominal control and rotation between shoulders and hips. It is this ability which provides the power and protection for the lumbar spine. |

Tips for Golfers with Back Pain : • Try to cut down on the back swing and follow through Concentrate on the power portion of the swing Keep the golf swing symmetrical Avoid lateral bending, especially in the follow through If you experience a sudden, sharp pain or hear a loud pop in your back, stop playing immediately Get hold of an ice compress and put it on the affected area. Let the cold sink in and totally numb the area. You may experience temporary burning pain initially due to the cold If the pain or discomfort persists, you should seek medical attention or visit your nearest chiropractor

Why Chiropractic Is Your Choice Help for Golf-Related Injuries: A chiropractor will zero in on the injured joint to evaluate the alignment of the ligaments and the muscles of the joint complex. His approach is to arrest the problem, administer the proper correction, induce healing and strengthen the joint complex with rehabilitation and supplements. The objective is to return the athlete to full function. Most chiropractors are also specialists in sports medicine. Painkillers and muscle relaxants may often help with the pain but can never correct the problem. It is very common now among professional athletes around the world, such as Tiger Woods, to acquire the help of a chiropractor so that they can perform at their best during competitions.

It was on October 8, 2004 when I visited this clinic for the first time because of pain on my right knee and elbow. I injured both while playing golf. I had undergone an endoscopic surgery for my knee in a hospital a year before. However, after the surgery, I had to rely on a crutch for 3 months before I could walk without one. I started to play golf in the 5th month though there was still a bit of pain when I bended my knee, went up and down the stairs and even during walking. I had been hoping to play golf without reserve. In September, I attributed a big change of my golf swing to my knee trouble. It was a terrible pain which I had never experienced before and I felt it only when I gripped the club. I hear that it is commonly known as “Tennis Elbow”. This pain set me off to visit Chiropractic First, which had advertised before in “Shinnichiho”, a local Japanese paper. They advised me that they would be able to remove the pain after the 10th treatment. I was half in doubt but now, I hardly feel pain in both my knee and elbow. I anticipate that my golf swing will improve in future when my right knee recovers. It sets my mind at ease to know that I have Chiropractic First to help me. Thank you very much. Ms Harada

Dear Doctor, I have been experiencing stiff and painful elbows over the months. Whenever I touch my elbows, there is a painful sensation radiating down my arms until about 3-4 inches away from the wrists. I have been to the doctor a few times and he is still trying to figure it out. I wonder if it could be an onset of arthritis or some kind of joint disorder. My X-rays came back negative. I am only 35 years old, in good health except for a degenerative spine disease in L4-L5 lumbar and a frequent numbing and tingling sensation at the back of my neck. The pain in my elbows is affecting any lifting that I do with my arms. What could be causing my problem? Firstly, I must detemine if there are any associated paresthesia and hand weakness. Subsequently, I must determine the exact location of the elbow pain. If the elbow pain is on the lateral side and the forearm extensor muscle, then the most likely diagnosis is lateral epicondylitis. The most common cause of the problem is due to overuse or repetitive strain. X-ray of the elbow would only provide information about the condition of the elbow joint. It may also detect joint effusion. The patient is also suffering from neck pain and tingling. X-ray of the neck should also be taken to determine the condition of the cervical spine, particularly C5/6 segment. MRI can also be taken to determine if there is any tear in the muscle-tendon.
