We unleash your child’s potential
A child’s spine is subjected to a range of stresses from birth. All births, particularly assisted deliveries, are stressful for a child’s body and can affect the baby’s developing spine and nervous system. Children’s bodies also grow and develop at a rapid rate. As they grow up they run, play, fall, tumble, and trip over countless times. It’s important to look after their developing bodies during childhood to give them the best start in life.
Subluxation is the term used for vertebrae and other bones or joints that are not moving well, are misaligned or causing interference to the nervous system. The nervous system controls everything your child does; from breathing and digesting to running, playing, thinking and feeling. Interference can impair your child’s ability to function at their best.
Chiropractic care also benefit children who suffer from:
• Recurrent ear infections
• Persistent sore throats and colds
• Bedwetting and/or constipation
• Growing pains
• Bad posture
Such common childhood disorders are resulted from spinal dysfunction which causes interference to the nerve system. When the spine is misaligned, the body is not functioning properly. Chiropractic care supports a child’s development of the spine naturally by restoring the nerve system function and strengthen the immune system.
Children Chiropractic Care FAQ
Is chiropractic safe for infants and children?
Chiropractic care is extremely safe for infants and children. All Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) receive basic paediatric training as part of their core curriculum during chiropractic college when they are earning their doctorates.
Doctors use very gentle adjustments and pediatrics techniques which involve very light fingertip pressure to correct spinal misalignments. This amount of “force” is often not more than a finger touch.
We would be happy to go over these techniques with you prior to bringing your kids in.
When should a child visit a chiropractor?
Significant spinal trauma can occur as early at birth. We recommend getting your child checked for subluxation as early as possible. Getting adjusted from an early age can minimize or even eliminate any effect that bumps and falls (and even the birthing process) can have on our spinal joints. Much of the degeneration we see later in life is a result of past trauma.
As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.
What adjustment techniques are used for children?
We will guide you through the best choices for your child’s individual health status, complaint, and developmental stage. A typical clinic visit may include a combination of gentle spinal adjustments, craniosacral therapy, extremity joint mobilizations, and neurosensory integration manoeuvres to help address any joint dysfunctions and restore optimal brain-body communication for your child. Even in toddlers and older children the adjustments are gentle and do not hurt. Sometimes a pop can be heard when gas is released from the joint.
All treatments are modified and catered to a child’s developmental stage and their specific needs each visit. Gentle mobilization techniques and gentle vibration are used to mobilize the joints.
How often does a child need to be adjusted?
The frequency of adjustment depends on the age of the child, their condition and activities / sports that they are involved.
One of the most common reasons parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults.
After the initial evaluation, an individualized treatment plan will be recommended.
How is chiropractic care different from medical care?
Chiropractic care is different from medical care in focus and in treatment tools. Chiropractors focus on the neuromusculoskeletal system and optimizing your body’s ability to heal and thrive on its own. It is a natural, drug free and non-invasive health approach.
Medical Doctors (MD) primarily use pharmaceutical agents to effect chemical change and surgery to affect physical change, whereas Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) effect physical and neural change using primarily their hands and encourage chemical balance using nutrition and lifestyle modifications.
How Do I Know If My Child Has Subluxation?
Our doctor will perform the following series of examinations to assess your child’s health condition:
• Head tilt and rotation check
• Shoulder level check
• Scoliosis screening
• Bilateral weight check
• Range of motion check
• Spine palpation check
