Sciatica is one of the most common, yet often misunderstood, types of pain. Almost 40% of people will get it during their life and it becomes more frequent as you age.

Sciatica refers to back pain caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve. This is a large nerve that runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. When something injures or puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, it can cause pain in the lower back that spreads to the hip, buttocks, and leg.

The symptoms of sciatica are commonly felt along the path of the large sciatic nerve. Sciatica is often characterised by one or more of these:

Pain: Constant burning sensation or pain starting in the lower back or buttock and radiating down the thigh and leg
Numbness: Sciatica pain may be accompanied by numbness in the back of the leg. Sometimes, tingling or weakness may be present.
One-sided symptoms: Typically affects one leg. The condition results in a feeling of heaviness in the affected leg. Rarely both legs may be affected together
Posture induced symptoms: May feel worse while sitting, trying to stand, bending the spine forward, twisting the spine, lying down or while cough-ing. These symptoms may be relieved by walking or applying a heat pack over the rear pelvic region.

The chiropractic approach to sciatica (and other health problems) is to tap into your body’s ability to cure itself by removing nerve interference and restoring bodily function. This will revitalize your body’s healing ability. Physical examinations such as X-ray, alert the chiropractor to any types of underlying factors which compli-cate a patient’s case. Recommendations will be made specific to each patient. Chiropractors are always concerned with the long-term spinal health of each patient.

“For the last 20 years, I have had episodes of lower backaches every 3 or 4 months. I had to lie down for a couple of days especially after long drives up to Malaysia or after a game of golf. I could not stand on my feet for more than 20 minutes.

I consulted a physiotherapist who could not help but instead referred me to a doctor who gave me an injection to relieve the pain. My friend recom-mended me to Chiropractic First and I was apprehensive at first.

After 3 weeks of regular adjustments, I felt significantly less stresses on my lower back. I am now able to stand for up to 3 hours without feeling any strains on my lower back. I am more flexible which helped with my golf swing as I am able to turn much more than before.”
